Beijing preps COVID-19 hospital spaces, though new cases low

Beijing is preparing new medical equipment to deal with violence in the COVID-19 case, although the number of new cases has dropped.

The state-run media reported on Tuesday that a 1,000-bed hospital in Xiaotangshan in the northeast was built for the 2003 SARS outbreak if needed.

Unofficial online reports say thousands of beds have been set up at a designated center near the airport, but state-run media did not prove those plans in something that could be an attempt to avoid public outrage.

New cases in Beijing continue to mount, with another 62 cases reported on Monday, 11 of which showed no signs of infection, slightly out of the nearly 50 per day over the weekend. Beijing has reported nearly 450 outbreaks in the past two weeks.

China is sticking to its zero-COVID system, which prohibits travel, population testing and the establishment of temporary parks to try to isolate all infected people. Lockdowns start with buildings and neighborhoods but remain in the city if the virus is widespread.

This comes as many countries have eased sanctions against the disease. Experts are skeptical of the benefits of China’s radical policy, saying the new COVID-19 vaccine and treatment will make them work again.

Beijing has ordered the closure of restaurants and gyms for the May National Day holiday that runs through Wednesday, while major tourist attractions in the city, including Beijing’s banned wildlife city. , will close indoor exhibitions from Tuesday.

A three-round re-run has been ordered for most of the city’s 21 million people from Tuesday, following a similar demand last week. The negative test results obtained in the last 48 hours are required to get an entry into the majority public places.

Authorities in Shanghai are slowly beginning to ease the curfew that has locked most of the city’s 26 million people into their homes, apartments or neighborhoods for almost a month.

Shanghai received another 5,669 complaints on Monday, all 274 of them ill, with an additional 20 deaths.
