Creative solution to shortage of in-home healthcare workers

 May 3, 2022

SACRAMENTO, California – Alice McMenamine loves her home. It’s a place she shares with her husband and animals.

McMenamine has been living with Multiple Sclerosis since the 1990s. Although it did not affect his spirit, it did affect his ability to take care of himself.

McMenamin was forced to seek help, but feared he would lose his freedom at home.

“It was very difficult,” he said

Home health care is expensive and inadequate. Kaiser Health News reports that home health agencies are dismissing 40% of referrals for staff shortages.

They blame the scarcity on burning, low wages, and hiring hospitals and other jobs for better wages and hours. The average salary for a home health worker is about $ 10 an hour.

According to PHI, an industry research group, there are more than 2 million home health , but the population of 65 and over is expected to double by 2050, reaching nearly 90 million.

Increasing demand and decreasing supply have led to some creative solutions in the private sector.

Trina Kaplow is one of the founders of Alice Care, a new application-based home care provider. Like a car-sharing app, customers can schedule support for a task, such as a bath, and be allowed to take on the task by an authorized home care provider.

“The difference is that a traditional agency will require a minimum of four hours and often several times a week, which can be very costly and excessive,” Kaplow said.

“It’s very flexible and I decide what I’m going to do at the moment,” said Maria Vazquez, a CNA who works as an app provider.

In this great way of resigning from an economy, where the worker has more power, Vazquez believes that a flexible schedule in a career without the usual flexibility is a change.

“I have three kids. I’m still taking classes. I’m applying to nursing school. It’s like my life is hectic. That’s why I took it to that gravity,” Vazquez said.

Industries are changing, and health is no different. As they find more creative solutions to staff shortages, people like McMenamin are grateful to be able to do something about it.

“Eventually one of my complications will get better for me, but until then, he won’t win,” he said.
