MiraCosta College A free program will begin this fall for a certificate of completion in managing affordable housing, officials announced on Wednesday.
The number of affordable homes built in California in 2021 increased by 43% over the previous year, according to the 2022 California Housing Partnership 2022 Annual Affordable Housing Report released Wednesday.
“We have heard from our members who build affordable housing that there is a clear need for staff to manage and maintain these homes,” said Stephen Russell, president and CEO of the San Diego Housing Federation. “These are well-paid jobs that benefit communities that need more career opportunities.
“This study demonstrates the value of the MiraCosta College certification program,” he added. “Although it is good news that the number of homes built for those in need has increased, we have a long way to go to meet demand.”
According to the report, the San Diego area needs to build an additional 171,685 units by 2029 to meet its needs. At the same time, in San Diego, the income needed to be able to pay the average rent as an “affordable” rate increased by 20% to $ 7,510 last month.
The MiraCosta Certificate Program is a collaboration between the College’s Short-Term Career Preparation and the San Diego Housing Federation. The SDHF plans to offer four county-wide information sessions about the program. According to the college, the program will target traditionally underprivileged communities for prospective students who can use the program to build a career that will have a positive impact on their neighborhood.
Erica Duran, president of the non-credit and short-term career preparation program at the college, said there is a huge demand for real estate managers, especially those with formal job training.
Obtaining a certificate requires two four-week courses, both of which are offered free of charge. Each course will be limited to 20 students, so that students can complete the certificate as a group.
The first course, Introduction to Affordable Housing Management, introduces students to real estate management and leadership with an emphasis on affordable housing and real estate for many families. Students will learn about the laws and regulations governing affordable housing. They will complete course assignments and activities by modeling real-world scenarios and will learn from current and former industry professionals who serve as volunteer mentors.
The second course, Emerging Leaders in Affordable Housing Management, extends to the skills from the first course. It prepares students to complete financial reports and documents needed by real estate managers and to develop effective relationships with various stakeholders. Each student will also work with a mentor from the industry to help them develop advanced leadership and problem-solving strategies.
In the spring of 2023, MiraCosta will offer free tuition to up to 40 students in the class to pursue and complete three real estate exam preparation courses in community education.
