Know the basics — pedestrian safety
8 safety tips for drivers
- Watch out for pedestrians everywhere, at all times.
- Be especially careful when driving in hard-to-see conditions, such as night or bad weather.
- Slow down and be ready to stop when you turn or otherwise enter a pedestrian crossing.
- Indulge in pedestrians at pedestrian crossings and stop away from the pedestrian crossing to give other vehicles a chance to see pedestrians at the crossing so that they too can stop.
- Never miss vehicles stopped at a pedestrian crossing. Maybe people go where they can’t be seen.
- Never drive under the influence of alcohol and / or drugs.
- Adhere to speed limits, especially around people on the street, in school zones and neighborhoods where children are present.
- Be especially careful when moving backwards and looking for pedestrians.
8 Walking safety tips
- Follow traffic rules and obey signs and signals.
- Walk on the sidewalks whenever they are available.
- If there are no sidewalks, walk towards the traffic and as far away from the traffic as possible.
- Cross the streets at pedestrian crossings or intersections. Look for cars in all directions, including those that turn left or right.
- If a pedestrian crossing or intersection is not available, locate a well-lit area where you have the best view of traffic. Wait for a traffic hole that allows enough time for safe crossing; keep an eye on the traffic as you cross.
- Watch out for cars entering or exiting the driveway, or moving backwards in parking lots.
- Avoid alcohol and drugs while walking; they impair your abilities and your judgment.
- Accept walking as a healthy form of transportation – get up, get out and get moving
