Note the Loma Nazarene baseball team is directed to Division II NCAA West Regionals On Thursday as the No. 1 seed, continuing a roll that lasted virtually the entire season.

After a sweep of four games in Fresno Pacific, the Sea Lions finished 43-7 – 25-7 PacWest – and did not leave a series all season, only suffered a split last month at the hands of the Auckland Academy of Art.

PLNU also set many conference and school records as it completed one of the best regular seasons in the school’s history by winning the school’s first PacWest baseball crown.

Now the Sea Lions are going to make their fourth regional trip and third in the last five seasons. But this time it is close to home, as Point Loma will be the host.

With an early farewell, they face the winner of the competition 11 a.m. Northwest Nazarene-Cal Poly Pomona. The PLNU game follows at 2 noon

Despite their success, the conference title was in line for Wednesday’s closing season as Azuza Pacific (34-16, 23-9, PacWest) remained on the hunt. The defeat of APU by Biola, secured Point Loma at least a share of the first place with the opportunity to win definitively completing the scan of Fresno Pacific.

The Sea Lions won both games 14-7 and 14-9.

“A conference championship is a big deal. “It means you were good from day one and these guys have been good all year,” said head coach Justin James after the sweep in Fresno.

Point Loma’s victories are the most since the Division II season for the program and the best record since the team won 47 games in 2003. The 43 victories also equate to PacWest for victories in a California-designated season. Baptist in 2012 and again in 2014.

Sea Lion staff lead the conference with 2.98 ERA, the fourth best grade in conference history. The attack also set the pace for PacWest with an average hit of 0.308. The team also entered the weekend as the best hosts in the country.

The top performers were Baxter Halligan, who equaled the PacWest record with his 11th win of the season on Tuesday, while also reaching 0.337. Closer, Cole Hillier had 19 saves and Otto Kemp had 13 home runs and led the conference with 61 runs.
