Wildfire in Fresno County now 60% contained, crews continue to battle hotspots

 May 2, 2022

, California (KFSN) – A fire in Fresno County that triggered evacuation warnings and injured two firefighters on Wednesday has been reduced by 60%.

The house fire broke out near Tollhouse and Pittman streets at 12:30 p.m.

It spread to more than 170 acres of brush, threatening structures and power lines.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office issued evacuation warnings for some locals, urging them to prepare to leave quickly if the fire spreads out of control.

But the crews managed to deal with the fire, as they attacked the flames from the air and from the ground. After working all night, CAL FIRE announced Thursday morning that the crews had reached 60% of the limit.

The day shift of firefighters will continue to work on Thursday, cleaning the hotspots until a 100% reduction is achieved.

On Wednesday, two firefighters were injured when they were hit by a boulder – one, a U.S. Forest Service firefighter, had to be airlifted to hospital. The other, a CAL FIRE firefighter, was transported by ground ambulance with a shoulder injury. Both are expected to be okay.

From the sky, two of CAL FIRE’s new Sikorsky FireHawk helicopters attacked the flames.

“These are some of CAL FIRE’s newest air resources,” said Ryan Michaels, CAL FIRE Assistant Fire Chief. “They are faster, they have more water dropping capabilities and that helped us reduce the fire.”

They can hold 1,000 gallons of water – that is three times the amount that a normal firefighting helicopter can drop.
Fuel supply on fire, grass, trees and steep terrain posed a challenge for firefighters.

But the low temperatures brought some relief until the evening.

“The weather will be good for us, so we hope the firefighters can continue the fight, win the upper hand all night and tomorrow, we hope, we just eliminate the hotspots,” said Michaels.

Still – fire crews do not take anything for granted.

“It only takes one emblem to fall into this line of restraint and we are going to the races again,” Michaels said.
