A 22-year-old man was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of murder and other charges in connection with the death of a 31-year-old woman by gunfire and the injury of her 12-year-old son behind an apartment complex in Lincoln Park, police said.
The shooting was reported at 2:19 a.m. Saturday, according to Lt. Steve Shebloski. San Diego Police Department. The caller said a shot was fired from behind a block of flats at 300 South Willie James Jones Avenue, the lieutenant said.
“Officers from the Southeast Division arrived at the scene and found a woman suffering multiple gunshot wounds to the upper part of her body,” Sebloski said. “Police called doctors, but the woman suffered catastrophic injuries and was found dead at the scene at 2:25 a.m.”
Police also located a 12-year-old boy who suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg and a 32-year-old man with a fracture and other injuries to his face and other parts of his body.
Shortly after police arrived, they found a man with a gunshot wound to the wrist and found a nearby firearm believed to have been used in the shooting, Shebloski said.
San Diego resident Alex Galvan has been taken into custody, the lieutenant said.
Police also arrested a 24-year-old male companion of Galvan, who was in the process of determining his possible role in the shootings. A third man was reportedly seen running from the site. His potential role has not yet been determined, but he is a person of interest, Shebloski said.
Murder detectives were called to the scene to investigate the incident.
“The 12-year-old man who was shot in this incident was found to be the son of the dead woman and the 32-year-old man,” Shebloski said. “It is still early in the investigation and little is known about the circumstances that led to the death of the woman and her son by gunfire.
“However, it appears that Alex Galvan, his 24-year-old male partner, and possibly the third man, were involved in a physical altercation with the 32-year-old shortly before the woman and their 12-year-old son arrived. “Galvan and his companions in the parking lot behind the apartment complex,” Shebloski said. “At that time, the woman was shot several times along with her 12-year-old son.”
The 12-year-old, his 32-year-old father and Galvan were taken to local hospitals for treatment of their injuries. Galvan will be jailed on suspicion of murder and additional shooting-related charges once he is released from the hospital.
The woman who was killed was identified, but her name was not released pending family notification.
Anyone with information about the incident was encouraged to call the Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
